Interpretation of Contemporary Pashtun Poetry Poetry holds a special place in the hearts of the Afghan people and is one of the most valued art forms. Afghanistan has a rich tradition of poetry spanning thousands of years. The famous Dari Sufi poet Jalāl al-Dīn Muḥammad Rūmī is considered one of the most famous figures in this tradition. Many other poets, both male and female, write in the Pashto language and explore themes such as spirituality and the transcendent. One of the most famous female poets in Pashtun poetry is Nazo Tokhi, a legendary 17th-century war heroine who is highly respected in Pashtun history. A particular form of poetry used by several female authors is the "Landey" (a short poem), known for its brevity and unique portrayal of the female perspective. Many contemporary women poets choose to publish their work anonymously and meet in secret to exchange ideas and find inspiration from other women poets. The tradition of using Pashtun poetry in songs has endured as poetry is considered the heart of music. During this event we will explore the possibilities of honoring both ancient and contemporary Pashtun poetry and songs by male and female poets. We also immerse ourselves in a multi-layered musical universe that seamlessly combines elements of contemporary music, improvisation and influences from Western jazz and chamber music with the words and sounds from Afghanistan.
